A smokey house fire in Mount Vernon had people gasping for air Monday as crews fought to extinguish the flames.
The fire broke out at a two-story, multi-family home at 316 South 4th Ave.
Witnesses say the fire was first spotted on the roof and say the wind made it difficult to breathe with thick smoke swirling.
The cause of the fire appeared to be accidental, according to the deputy chief of the Mount Vernon Fire Department.
All eight people living in the house got out safely.
