A Sleepy Hollow building was demolished Thursday after a fast-moving fire claimed the structure, leaving six families homeless.Officials said the three-story building at 68 Beekman Ave. was too unstable, resulting in apartments and a ground-floor restaurant being torn down. The fire also damaged the roof of a pizzeria next door and apartments over a dental office.
Investigators blame an electrical fire that started in an apartment for the destruction. About 150 firefighters battled the intense flames for at least three hours Wednesday evening.
The six affected families are working to rebuild their lives after the initial shock of losing everything they own.
The owner of a nearby Beekman Avenue gourmet kitchen store is thankful his business was not damaged. "It worked out for us ? not for everyone though," says Ray Cabana. "Other than us losing two days of business."
According to Department of Buildings officials, the property had a history of electrical and plumbing violations. However, the owner had been making upgrades over the last year.
