Officials are now investigating the practices of an Orange County business for allegedly demanding tax breaks it was not entitled to.
Sen. James Skoufis says Medline made threats on record to abandon its newly built, 1.3 million-square-foot building in Montgomery if the town refused to lower its tax assessment.
The expansive property on Route 416 is currently assessed at $35 million.
Skoufis says Medline is now suing for an 84% property tax reduction, costing taxpayers money in unnecessary legal fees.
"Time after time, they have proven to be some of the most nefarious corporate actors in Orange County. They tried to rip off taxpayers at the IDA and they're now trying to rip off taxpayers on the back end, claiming that the building we are standing in front of should only be assessed at $5 million," he says.
Skoufis says he referred the results of his investigation to the Orange County DA to see if criminal charges can be filed.
