Volunteers from across Westchester turned out this morning to help buy gifts for the less fortunate.

The group visited the Kmart in Greenburgh and filled carts with gifts to help the Saint Nicholas Project. The program, sponsored by Catholic Charities, is designed to help needy families during the holidays.

The organization has held the annual event at a Kmart in Manhattan for the past 10 years, and now it has brought it to Westchester.

Catholic Charities raises the money for the project throughout the year and about $50 is spent on each person. Volunteers then come to the store and are given a profile of a family in need plus a shopping list, and they pick out the items.

The money is mostly spent on basic necessities such as bedding and clothing, but many volunteers will often spend their own money to add a toy or something extra for the children on their lists.
