A few million gallons of raw sewage was dumped into the Hudson River Sunday as Westchester officials looked to fix part of a sewer line in Yonkers.

The chlorinated raw sewage was dumped between midnight and 4 a.m. Sunday. Health officials have said a gasket on the line north of the Yonkers Joint Wastewater Treatment Plant needed to be replaced to stanch a minor leak.

Officials say they tried to fix the pipe back in October, but the repair didn't work. To avoid another major spill such as one that happened two years ago, the New York State Department of Environmental Conservation agreed to issue an emergency permit for the work to be completed.

The Westchester County Department of Health says an advisory that was put into effect still stands and it is asking residents to avoid contact with the water until Monday, when they expect the sewage will dissipate into the Hudson's tides and currents.
