City agencies are cleaning up Webster Avenue and surrounding streets in Bedford Park following a major water main break that sent water gushing through city streets and into businesses.

The Department of Environmental Protection says the broken pipe was from 1890. The department says an emergency contractor is prepping the area for repair work.

The NYPD has been towing away cars impacted by the flooded streets. The Parks Department was working to remove a downed tree that was blocking access to the site of the broken pipe

The DEP said “all residential buildings and businesses have working water service, as does the PS/MS 20 school and the 52nd Precinct.”

It also says that the New York Botanical Garden has limited water service. It closed for the day.

News 12 spoke with Ruby Solis, a waitress at Nick’s Garden Coffee Shop on Webster Avenue. She said that the shop was unable to fully operate due to no gas or electricity.

City officials say residents and businesses affected should file a claim by calling 311. Small Business Services is also working to help people in the area.
