An emotional tribute was given to a New Rochelle native and one of the oldest members of staff in Congress during Women's History Month.
Geri Shapiro, who has been long considered an institution in the world of Westchester and Washington politics, is now in the final stages of a courageous battle with cancer.
Shapiro joined Sen. Kirsten Gillibrand's staff in 2009 after serving as Hillary Clinton's Westchester regional director.
Sen. Gillibrand paid tribute to Shapiro's lifelong career in public service on the Senate floor.
"When Geri speaks, people listen, and when she gives advice, you know it comes from a place of deep knowledge and careful thought. New York and this nation need more leaders like her. When asked what motivates her, Geri says, 'Do good, feel good,' a maxim that is evident in everything she’s done. She is truly an inspiration to everyone who knows her, and I am so grateful for everything she’s done for Westchester and our state," said Gillibrand.
Shapiro got the bug for politics after volunteering at her daughter's school where she served as Edgemont PTA president.
