Sen. Chuck Schumer is pushing a proposal for children's organizations to obtain additional background information about the people they hire.
The proposal comes after 71 people were arrested in a child pornography sting, including a local Boy Scout leader and ex-police chief.
Under New York law, most children's groups can only look at state background checks when hiring new employees.
The Democratic senator is proposing those organizations have access to a new federal database to look beyond state records when checking out an employee's criminal history.
The proposal would give children's organizations more background information, including access to FBI fingerprints
Schumer says under the proposal, fees for running the background checks could pay for the national network.
