U.S. Sen. Charles Schumer joined forces with others at the Putnam County Sheriff's Department Tuesday to discuss ways to obtain more funding to combat heroin use.
Schumer wants to designate Putnam and Rockland counties as high-intensity drug-trafficking areas, or HIDTA.
He says the designation allows law enforcement, as well as treatment and prevention education services, to get needed funds.
Even though Putnam County is known for its low crime rate, heroin arrests there have increased by 300 percent over the past two years. Arrests have doubled in Rockland County.
