Officials in Ramapo and Rockland County are stepping up security for Jewish communities, including New Square, in the wake of Tuesday's attack in Jerusalem.
On Tuesday, two Palestinian cousins attacked and killed four rabbis during a prayer service in a Jerusalem synagogue. The attack was particularly brutal, with the two attackers reportedly using a meat cleaver to kill their victims.
Three of the four men killed were Americans, and one had connections with the Orthodox community in New Square. Rabbi Moshe Twersky is a distant cousin to Rabbi David Twersky, of New Square.
"People take these acts of opportunity and so we wanted to harden those targets and make people aware," said Ramapo Town Supervisor Christopher St. Lawrence.
A fifth person, an Israeli police officer, was also killed in the attack.
Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu is promising retaliation.
