Concerns over rail safety have caught the attention of one New York State lawmaker.
Sen. Chuck Schumer (D) was in Newburgh yesterday talking about concerns surrounding the safety of railroad bridges in the region.
Schumer says there appears to be structural concerns with some CSX-owned train bridges, including one in Cornwall. Trains use the bridges to carry crude oil. "Any problems with the structural integrity of these bridges could lead to a major disaster. The only way to ensure private companies keep bridges safe is to have an independent inspection," says Schumer.
A rep for CSX says the bridge's appearance doesn't necessarily mean there's a problem with its structural integrity. The company also says it follows all federal requirements for inspections.
