Sen. Charles Schumer has announced a proposed bill that would provide more than $300 million to improve living conditions for military families at West Point.

The National Defense Authorization Act would provide more than $300 million to remedy allegedly unsafe living conditions in privatized housing at West Point and other military bases nationwide. Schumer says the bill is a response to complaints of mold and other unsafe conditions.

"Our nation's finest deserve the finest housing possible, not leaky homes coated in mold," says Schumer, who is urging Congress to pass the legislation.

Schumer says more than half of the homes inspected on West Point in November had mold, and that there could be hundreds more in disrepair.

The proposed legislation would also establish a tenant bill of rights, as well as staffing for routine inspections and repairs. Schumer says it could pass as early as next week.
