Rye woman killed in lion attack
The American tourist killed by a lion at a wildlife park in South Africa has been identified as a woman from Rye.
Family members confirm that Katherine Chappell, 29, was killed when a lioness attacked her through a car window on Monday.
Park officials say she was taking pictures with the window of her car rolled down when the animal pounced. The tour guide in the car reportedly suffered a heart attack and other injuries trying to save Chappell.
Lion Park - located near Johannesburg - offers close-up views of wildlife and is visited by thousands of tourists every year. Park policy states that vehicle windows must remain closed at all times.
The lioness will be moved to another property while the park investigates, but it will not be put down.
Chappell, known as Katie, had been living in Vancouver since 2013. She was an Emmy award-winning video editor.
She was in South Africa on vacation and was also seeking donations to help save endangered wildlife from poaching.
Chappell's sister released a statement on Facebook which read, "Katie was a brilliant, kind, adventurous and high-spirited woman. Her energy and passion could not be contained by mere continents or oceans."
Wake services are planned for Friday evening at the Graham Funeral Home in Rye. A funeral service will be held Saturday.
Chappell graduated from Hofstra University on Long Island. She also graduated from the School of the Holy Child in Rye.
This marks the third recent attack at the South African park. The other two were not fatal.
