About 1,000 runners hit the streets for the 96th Annual Yonkers Marathon on Sunday – the second-oldest marathon in the country. Scottie Mitchell was the first person to cross the finish line for the full marathon. "It feels really good to finish in first place," Mitchell said. It was a major accomplishment for the runner, especially since it was his first time competing in this particular race.
"I live in Irvington... so it's close by, and I wanted a race that I could do close to home," he said.
Athletes also participated in the half-marathon and the 5K. Those races had shorter distances but rigorous routes.
“We went down South Broadway of Yonkers. It was really nice. It was a lot of intricate turns [and] you had to be on your toes," said Edens Charles.
Despite any difficulties on the course, some runners said these races provided them an opportunity to get outside and do what they love.
"I was a track star when I was 12… then I really stopped running after that, and now 40 years later I'm taking it up again," said Crystal Collins.
Collins ran the 5K and said she may even consider running the full marathon in the future. That race counts as a qualifier for the Boston Marathon.
