Runaway garbage truck slams into car and house in Mount Vernon
A runaway garbage truck slammed right into a car and a house in Mount Vernon.
Authorities tell News 12 that the truck went crashing into the front porch of a home.
A man who did not want to appear on camera was inside the house at the time of the incident.
"The house was shaking, felt like something really heavy hitting the house, the whole house was shaking," he says.
There were three DPW workers operating the truck. News 12 was told those employees were behind the truck collecting garbage when it took off.
"The truck vibrated and jumped into gear, took off with no one behind the wheel. It just took off and went into the house," says DPW Commissioner Mark Ederer.
Authorities say the vehicle is roughly 20 years old and that it passed a safety check before hitting the road.
The incident is just the latest in a series of incidents involving city facilities. Last month, rubber gloves were discovered stuffed in sanitation trucks in what appeared to be sabotage.
Mayor Richard Thomas is renewing calls to purchase new vehicles.
"We need the public's help to convince the City Council and comptroller to help us," he says.
City Council President Andre Wallace tells News 12 that because the city lost its bond rating, funding is hard to come by.
No one was hurt but News 12 was told that the truck is now out of commission, suspending recycling and putting trash pickup this week up in the air.
Authorities say that replacing the truck would cost about $200,000.
