Officials say a Rockland County resident has been cleared of Ebola after being quarantined for 21 days.
Rockland County officials are only notifying the public now, and tell News 12 that the resident completed a voluntary three-week isolation period at home without developing symptoms. The woman had returned from Liberia on Oct. 5. County officials have opted not to release any more information about her, citing privacy laws.
The county defended its decision to not notify the public earlier, saying the person displayed no symptoms and was never a public health threat.
"There was no chance of exposure at the time and our judgement was why panic people," says Rockland County Executive Ed Day.
The county says it followed CDC guidelines and monitored the resident at home.
Officials at Nyack Hospital hosted a community forum on Ebola and enterovirus Wednesday evening. They say the forum was an opportunity to dispel rumors about the viruses and help give information about how to take precautions.
So far, only two cases of enterovirus have been confirmed in Orange and Rockland counties.
