Officials in Rockland County are urging the public to abide by social distancing guidelines to slow the spread of COVID-19.

Rockland County said it will issue the state-mandated $1,000 fine to individuals who violate social distancing orders. The county’s Health Department said it's illegal to congregate in a group larger than 10 people.

However, photos and videos of the ultra-Orthodox Jewish community circulating online have many asking if the rules are working.

Yossi Gestetner, of the Orthodox Jewish Public Affairs Council, said singling out one group is dangerous because the virus affects everyone. He says many within the community are practicing social distancing, including his own family members who won't be together to celebrate Passover.

"A photo of a moment does not even tell you a quarter of the picture," he said.

Legislator Aron Wieder told News 12 that there “needs to be 110% compliance” when it comes to social distancing.
