Rockland County Executive Ed Day is resting at home after undergoing surgery for prostate cancer Friday morning.
The surgery was performed at an undisclosed New York City hospital. According to Day's office, his doctor says the prognosis is excellent and significant side effects are not expected.
Day's spokesman, Scott Salotto, says the executive is lucky that the cancer was detected early. Day is a strong proponent of regular checkups because his father died of unchecked prostate cancer.
In a statement released by his office, Day urged all Rockland residents, especially those known to be at a higher risk, to make cancer screening a regular part of their medical routine.
Day is expected to return to work on a limited schedule by early next week. In the meantime, Deputy County Executive Guillermo Rosa is in charge.
The American Cancer Society estimates that more than 220,000 men will be diagnosed with prostate cancer this year.
