Rockland County Highway Department out on the road as snow falls
News 12 visited the Rockland County Highway Department in Chestnut Ridge on Friday before the snowstorm to see how it prepared.

The Rockland County Highway Department is ready for the snowstorm.
"We'll be able to handle this," said Superintendent of Highways Charles "Skip" Vezzetti during News 12's visit to the department's facility in Chestnut Ridge on Friday.
He says the temperature is what will be a challenge for them but also a benefit. "No. 1, the cold really takes a toll on your equipment. But the fact that it's cold- it's not going to be a heavy snow - it'll be a lighter snow so it'll be easier pushing."
He says regular salt doesn't work well at certain cold temperatures, so they add magnesium chloride to it. That allows the salt to work well-below freezing.
Vezzetti says the county highway department takes care of 170 miles of road, broken up into 24 routes. Each route gets a plow truck.
They will deploy two new "midsized" plows for this storm on secondary roads.
Their size allows them to handle the tighter, winding county roads.
News 12 meteorologists say most of Rockland County can expect to see around 8 inches of snow.
