A Rockland County lawmaker is pushing for new legislation that would hold New York state accountable for the damages that potholes cause on vehicles.
Democratic Assemblyman Patrick Carroll describes traveling along state roads as being as bad as driving through a war zone.
He says it's time for the state to be held accountable.
"They're awful, they ruin our axles and our tires, they're horrible," complained motorist Rayna Power.
Carroll says that's why he's stepping up to the plate and introducing the Safe Roads Act.
If passed, the measure would make the state of New York liable for vehicle damage due to defects on state roads.
"We've seen it all around Rockland, Clarkstown and Nyack. The roads are like a war zone. Many people are calling our office. It's one of the biggest complaints we get. The DOT isn't fixing them quickly enough. This legislation allows liability on behalf of the state if notice is provided and the drivers can get some recourse," Carroll said on Sunday.
