After years of overcrowding, the Hi Tor Animal Care Center in Pomona is getting some more space.

The nonprofit will build a new facility on county-owned property.

Rockland County Executive Ed Day says he is donating more than an acre of land to Hi Tor to help it care for the more than 2,000 pets brought in every year.

"It will allow us to probably triple or quadruple the physical space of the shelter so that animals can be housed with appropriate space," says Hi Tor Board President Lizanne Fiorentino. "The staff will have better resources. It will be lighter, airier and healthier."

Officials at Hi Tor will be responsible for raising the money to build a new shelter.

They hope to break ground next year.
