The owner of a Rockland County-based consulting company has agreed to pay half a million dollars after admitting to using money from grants for personal use.
Federal prosecutors say Victoria Shaw, the owner of Wellcore in Suffern, admitted that the company applied for and received federal grants from the Drug-Free Communities Support Program, which included forged signatures of community leaders.
Shaw confessed to using the grants to pay a criminal defense attorney to represent a family member in a personal matter, as well as for gym memberships for herself and immediate family members. She also revealed that another person previously affiliated with Wellcore spent some of the funds for personal matters, including paying for their child's day camp expenses and birthday party, personal travel, and more.
Prosecutors also revealed that Wellcore officials spent some of the money at multiple restaurants in Albany.
The company is also the subject of a probe involving the Mount Vernon School District.
