Teachers at five Catholic schools in the archdiocese are staging a one-day strike, including one in Rockland County.
The New York Catholic archdiocese has been in contract talks with the Federation of Catholic Teachers, the union which represents more than 2,600 lay teachers.
The union contends the archdiocese is engaged in unfair labor practices. Union leaders say the archdiocese is threatening to close schools if the union does not accept a zero percent wage increase.
The 12 full-time lay teachers and one nun teaching at Saint Gregory Barbarigo School in Garnerville took part in a one-day strike Friday. Similar strikes are expected at other schools in the coming weeks, union officials say.
