State Sen. Terrence Murphy is facing scrutiny after documents were released showing a restaurant he co-owns owes over $100,000 in back property taxes.
According to the tax statement from the town of Yorktown, Murphy and his family owe over $117,000 dating back to 2013.
In 2014, the senator campaigned on his success as a small business owner, referencing his chiropractic practice and the restaurant.
The senator says that his brother runs the restaurant and he was kept in the dark about the taxes.
"I had no idea, as a matter of fact, I had to let my mother know today," says Sen. Murphy. "It is quite an embarrassing thing. Do you think any family wants to go through something like this?"
Sen. Murphy says he plans to pay back his portion of those taxes along with any penalties as soon as possible.
