New York State has now earned an unwelcome distinction.

A new report names the Empire State as the nation's number one heroin-trafficking hub. The report from New York City's special narcotics prosecutor found that the state accounts for a fifth of the nation's heroin seizures.

These are statistics that lawmakers in Albany, like state Sen. Terrence Murphy, are hoping to reverse. "Law enforcement data shows that 35 percent of the heroin seized in the U.S. was from the Empire State," says Murphy.

Last week, the state Senate passed a resolution directing more than $8 million to help in the fight against heroin.

In 2013, 90 people died of heroin-related deaths in Westchester alone.
