East Ramapo's chronic financial problems have landed it again on the state comptroller's list of financially stressed school districts
The embattled school district is currently listed by state Comptroller Tom DiNapoli as the sixth-most financially stressed district in New York state.
Some critics blame the Orthodox Jewish-dominated school board. Board members, including President Yehuda Weissmandl, point to state funding formulas.
In a written statement put out after release of the comptroller's report, Weissmandl said that it was no surprise the state still considers East Ramapo one the most financially stressed districts in New York.
He went on to say, "Our district is a high-needs district, but state funding formulas don't recognize that. As a result, East Ramapo is underfunded year after year."
While the district's finances remain significantly stressed, the report shows some good news, saying there has been an improvement over last year.
Weissmandl also contends the district is close to turning its finances around.
Comptroller DiNapoli's report lists the "most-stressed" school district in the state as the Hempstead School District, located on Long Island.
