The Red Cross says it's important to be "water smart" as the unofficial start to summer gets underway.

It says parents should never let kids swim unsupervised. And small children should be kept within arm's length.

You should chose to swim at pools or beaches with lifeguards. And never swim alone.

If you're in a group, you should designate a "water watcher" to keep a close eye on children or weaker swimmers. And if you're on a boat, you should wear a U.S. Coast Guard-approved life jacket.

The Red Cross says adhering to those basic tips can be lifesaving.

It says 10 people drown daily in the U.S. and that drowning is the second leading cause of unintentional death in children age 14 and under during the summer season.
