The group that runs Randall’s Island wants its park back.
It is threatening legal action against the city if the park’s migrant tents aren’t removed by the summer.
The city says it has no other options.
The Randall’s Island Park Alliance says the tents are illegal since they restrict public access.
They also say they are not aware of an environmental impact review.
The tents were added last August.
They house 3,000 migrants and take up close to 10 acres of parkland.
In a letter to the mayor, the alliance says the tents were built across four highly used athletic fields that once served thousands of New York City children - and 10,000 permit hours have since been lost.  They also say the tents have resulted in illegal mopeds speeding across the 103rd Street footbridge and have caused violence and illegal activity.
They’re concerned this will keep people from coming to visit the park.
The city says this is a difficult situation.
“We don’t have alternatives.  And so this is a way we’re able to stretch our resources and house people and really continue to keep a pace with the flow of migrants that are coming to New York City without having them sleep on the streets,” Meera Joshi, deputy mayor for Operations, said earlier this week.
Mayor Eric Adams also weighed in.    “When you see some of the hypocrisy of people who are saying bring us your tired, your poor, your huddled masses yearning to be free, but not on my block,” he said.
The alliance is asking for the tents to be removed by Aug. 8.
They say if the tents are up beyond that, they’re prepared to use all “legal recourse.”  They’re giving the city until June 14 to come up with a plan.
