Esty
Jeremias, a landlord accused of 17 house violations, did
not appear Tuesday in Ramapo Town Court for an arraignment.
Town
officials said it’s listed as a single-family home, but had 10 people living in
it, including in the basement.
Even though Jeremias was not in court, Ramapo's assistant town attorney told
the judge some steps that have been taken to improve the property. Handrails,
smoke detectors and carbon monoxide detectors have been installed. The tenant
in the basement has also been moved out.
No one answered the door Tuesday when News 12 knocked on
the door.
Esty
Jeremias is the wife of Jacob Jeremias – the landlord of 118 South Lake
St. in Spring Valley where five people died, including two kids, last month
from a fire that was caused by electrical problems.
Since then, Rockland's Office of Building and Codes, as well as Rockland Codes
Investigations found hundreds of violations for 12 properties owned by the couple.
News
12 also recently reported that the Town of Ramapo filed a complaint in state
Supreme Court against Esty to shut down the Debaun rental home until
violations are fixed. That is expected to be heard next week.
If someone does not show up to the next town court date in June, there could be
fines issued for each violation, which News 12 is told could be up to
$85,000.
