A rally was held Wednesday to save a historic Yonkers firehouse that was recently closed due to safety concerns.

More than 100 Yonkers firefighters and area residents stood side by side outside the shuttered State Street firehouse.

The firehouse closed down Saturday and its firefighters were relocated after engineers deemed the long-neglected building structurally unsafe. According to city officials, cracks in the building along the upper floors are one of the largest concerns.

Commissioner of Public Works Thomas Meier says that Mayor Mike Spano wishes to save the building if possible. He also says the city must determine the feasibility of repairing, renovating and restoring the building versus relocating.

Firefighters who called the station home say they hope the building could somehow be saved.

"Myself and the other firefighters are heartbroken and we really want to see this firehouse saved," says Cpt. Gregory Coyle, of the Yonkers Fire Department.

The city says it could take months before a final decision on the fate of the firehouse is made.
