The political firestorm surrounding the fundraising efforts of New York Mayor Bill de Blasio is intensifying, and it looks like the entire controversy may have been sparked from the complaints of two local Republicans.
De Blasio is accused of being the mastermind behind the Democrats' failed attempts to take over the state Senate two years ago by circumventing campaign finance law.
The lead investigator called his actions "willful and flagrant" and a "violation warranting criminal prosecution."
State Sen. Terrence Murphy, from Yorktown, is one of the Republicans targeted by de Blasio's political fundraising efforts.
Murphy alleges that the mayor illegally funnels huge sums of money from New York City business owners to party committees statewide, with nearly $400,000 going to Murphy's Democratic opponent Justin Wagner, who lost the race.
Financial records show that between 2009 and 2013, the Putnam Democrats never had more than $5,000 in their coffers, but it jumped to over $640,000 in 2014.
That's what prompted Putnam GOP Chair Anthony Scannapieco to file an official complaint two years ago that sparked it all.
