The Orange County Department of Health has issued a public health alert after a horse in Newburgh tested positive for Eastern Equine Encephalitis (EEE), also known as Triple E.
Health officials warn that EEE is one of the most serious mosquito-borne diseases in the United States, with a mortality rate of 30-60%.
The disease is circulating among mosquitoes that bite mammals, including humans.
Symptoms of EEE include:
- Sudden headache
- High fever
- Chills
- Vomiting
Residents are urged to report any suspected cases immediately by calling 845-291-2330. The health department is taking steps to monitor the situation and prevent further transmission.
