The tight-knit community of Somers, particularly the neighborhood on Granite Springs Road, remains in disbelief after a prominent doctor committed a murder-suicide, leaving locals grappling with the devastating news.
State police investigators received a distressing call around 7 a.m. on Saturday from a resident at a million-dollar home, where 40-year-old Dr. Krystal Cascatta resided with her husband.
In a heart-wrenching incident, Dr. Cascatta, a renowned Oncologist affiliated with the Mount Sinai Health System, fatally shot her 4-month-old baby before taking her own life.
She and her husband moved into their million-dollar home about two years ago. Police say he was away at the time of the incident, but Cascetta's parents were at the house when the shootings occurred.
Dr. Cascatta was highly regarded in the fields of Hematology and Oncology. She was actively involved in breast cancer clinical trials, earning respect among her colleagues.
The complexities surrounding such actions have left the community grappling for answers. Veronica Vaiti, a psychotherapist, shared insights on the many aspects of suicide, stating, "Suicide is a very complex issue, and there are multiple causes and reasons. What's often most painful is that it's hard to know the core reason for someone to take their life by suicide."
Mount Sinai Hospital released a statement expressing deep sorrow over the tragic loss and extending their heartfelt sympathies to Dr. Cascatta's family, friends, colleagues, and patients.
