Westchester County Department of Correction officials confirm positive coronavirus cases among dozens of employees and a handful of inmates inside the county jail.

Prison officials say that, as of March 31, they have 23 employees and six inmates that have tested positive for the coronavirus.

They say the corrections department has been working with the Westchester County Department of Health as well as the state Corrections Department since the outbreak began.

According to correction officials, they've implemented more than 60 measures to help prevent, detect and respond to any suspected COVID-19 cases.

On the second week of March, all on-site visitations to county jails were canceled due to the coronavirus outbreak. Fees for video visitation have been reduced.

Just recently, New York City's Mayor Bill De Blasio announced plans to release 300 inmates from Rikers Island due to the coronavirus outbreak.

De Blasio said all the inmates to be released have been convicted of misdemeanors or some nonviolent crimes and have less than one year remaining on their sentence.

Westchester County Department of Correction officials tell News 12 that at this time there are no plans to release inmates. They add the decision to release people placed in the custody of Westchester's Department of Correction does not fall under the authority of their agency.
