Nearly two dozen homes were still without electricity Friday after power lines fell the day before in an Elmsford neighborhood.
Con Ed officials said high winds caused a primary line to fall on a secondary line at the end of Barney Street around 1:30 p.m. Thursday. The downed wires caused a power surge that fried fuse boxes and electrical outlets in at least 23 homes located on North Evarts and North Perkins avenues.
Residents said there was a huge explosion, resulting in flickering lights before the power went out. In addition, many residents said their computers, printers and appliances were severely damaged and needed to be replaced.
Con Ed couldn't turn the power on until every home was tested and cleared by local electricians. While there is now power going to the homes, many are still without power because the fuse boxes will have to be replaced.
Officials said it could take a few days for some of the homes to have power restored.
A number of residents said they had to call their insurance companies to file claims for damage to their personal items. Con Ed said that it will pay for the electricians.
