The 2026 state legislative session is shaping up to be a critical one as lawmakers juggle an election year, cuts to federal dollars and the need to pass legislation that will make everyday living more affordable for New Yorkers.
Democratic state Assemblywoman Dana Levenberg said she believes the majority party will be able to preserve the most important programs, even with less money coming in from Washington, D.C.
"My mission continues to build healthy communities, which are environmentally healthy, economically healthy, physically and mentally healthy all through the lens of equity," she said.
Republican state Sen. Rob Rolison said the minority party will continue to push for more affordable solutions.
"These are real impacts," he said. "For the state of New York, these types of federal cuts can be very, very challenging."
News 12 asked lawmakers for their thoughts on other issues, including the environment, housing, and fighting crime.
