Power play: News 12 helps Hawthorne man after power outage
High winds knocked out power to a home in Hawthorne Monday, and the resident who lives there says Con Edison wasn’t doing much to help him.
Jim Reiman, a volunteer firefighter in Thornwood, says a branch snapped his wires Monday afternoon and left his home on Memorial Drive in the dark with no heat.
"There was a big loud sound that sounded like a freight train," he recalls.
A powerful 50 mph gust of wind knocked down the branch, splicing the lines and leaving the first responder with a broken foot and literally powerless.
Reiman says his electrician repaired the wires, but Con Edison then told him it would have to send out an inspector - which could take up to a month just to get an appointment.
"My answer is you gotta be kidding. This can't be. I'm sitting here in the dark and it's 4 p.m. and the sun is going down and it's getting kind of brisk in here," says Reiman.
News 12 called Con Edison, and it had an inspector at Reiman's house within minutes, with a planned power restoration by Tuesday night.
