The Hudson Valley housing market has been booming during the pandemic, but one study says New York City residents are flocking to one area in particular - Poughkeepsie.

Houses in the Poughkeepsie area are going like hotcakes during the pandemic.

"It was like, virus went up. Calls went up. Virus went down, calls went down," says Thomas Klug, of Hudson Valley Premier Properties Realty.

Joyce Stanton, of Century 21 Hudson Valley Realty, says she has a passion for this business so for her, it's been wonderful.

Klug says people should make an offer as soon as they can. "...If you see something you like. There's a good chance it's not going to be there tomorrow."

They say they have seen most of the market boom coming from New York City residents seeking refuge in the suburbs.



According to new statistics from Streetlight Data, a transportation analytics firm, most people from the New York metropolitan area moved to Poughkeepsie, Newburgh and Middletown - more than any other area of New York.

East Stroudsburg and the Miami-Fort Lauderdale area are the only two spots that saw more New York City residents.

Besides buying homes, they say city residents are even quick to claim rentals.

"They wanted out of the city. If you live in the city, you always have that option, you can go to the park, you can get outside. There's things to do. Everything was closed," says Klug.


"Where they can have their own house for a whole lot less money than they're probably doing a rental with. And have their own land. And the fresh air and the trees and all the good stuff that New York City doesn't offer," says Stanton.
