Authorities are investigating a possible drowning reported at an Asbury Park beach Saturday evening, as officials continue to warn beachgoers to stay out of the water when lifeguards are not on duty.

Police say emergency crews responded to the incident shortly after 7 p.m.

Details about the victim or their condition had not been released as of Sunday.

More crowds are heading to the shoreline as the weather starts to warm up. Officials, however, advise residents to keep in mind that beaches are not yet staffed with lifeguards. They say lifeguards are typically not on duty until Memorial Day weekend.

Asbury Park lifeguard Joe Bongiovanni told News 12 on Sunday that cold water temperatures and dangerous conditions this time of year can quickly put swimmers at risk.

"If your body temperature is 98.6, and you go in 50-degree water, within minutes your core body temperature starts to drop when that gets to be around 95," Bongiovanni explained. "You become hypothermic.”

Witnesses who were at the beach during the incident described seeing a woman floating on the beach and she was administered CPR until EMS arrived at the scene.
