Police say a Port Chester man was arrested for sexually assaulting a 16-year-old girl at Rye Town Park at midnight on Friday.
Authorities charged Richard A. Olmino, 21, with felony sexual abuse. Rye police said the suspect claimed to be armed with a knife.
The assault was interrupted by a security guard but the suspect got away. Police said Monday, Olmino is a landscaper possibly doing work in Rye and is now connected to two separate incidents happening in the cover of night over the last month in the city.
On June 3, an 18-year-old was assaulted at about 1 a.m. near Rye High School by a man following her. An alert was put out to the public which led to a second report by a 15-year-old.
The teen told investigators that she was walking on Milton Road on May 3 at 2 a.m. when she was approached by a stranger after departing her group of friends.
"She explained she got afraid and immediately returned back to her friends," said Police Commissioner Michael Kopy.
During their investigation, police discovered that Olmino was free on bail in connection with an arrest for criminal sexual act in Suffolk County when the incidents in Rye took place.
Police say Olmino's criminal record includes incidents of public lewdness and indecent exposure. He also has a charge in Port Chester for sexual abuse.
"I want to thank the victims publicly for their commitment and courage in an extremely difficult time,” said Kopy.
Olmino has been remanded to the Westchester County Jail with no bail. He is scheduled to return to Rye Court on Tuesday, June 27.
Anyone with information regarding Olmino is urged to call the Rye police at 914-967-1234.
