A popular smoke shop in Rye that's been in business since 1947 is set to close its doors for good.
T.D. Rye Smoke Shop stood on the corner of Purchase Street for more than 70 years, selling everything from lotto tickets to 35 cent packs of gum. Unfortunately, the lease is up and the landlord wants a change.
Loyal patrons flocked to the store to say goodbye to the mom-and-son duo who owned the shop. Peggy and Tony D'Onofrio have worked hard to keep the store going. Tony took over the store after his dad died. He often worked six days a week and greeted every customer with a smile.
The nostalgic holiday cards and pictures of baseball legends that once adorned the walls have all been packed away.
Tony says losing the store is like losing a family member. Customers are equally sad to see it go.
