Police say a White Plains woman practiced dentistry without a license.
Prosecutors say Valbona Yzeiraj was known as "Doctor Val" to patients in the Bronx. She worked for more than three years as an office manager for Dr. Jeffrey Schoengold, who hired her through a Craigslist ad. Yzeiraj allegedly worked as a baby sitter for Schoengold as well.
Investigators say Yzeiraj claimed to receive dental training in her home country of Albania, but was never trained or licensed in the United States.
Yzeiraj appeared in court Thursday on charges of impersonating a dentist. According to court documents, she saw patients from November 2012 to August 2013. She allegedly did injections in people's mouths, performed root canals and pulled teeth on several occasions.
One patient allegedly suffered an infection from Yzeiraj's work.
Schoengold reported Yzeiraj to the authorities and fired her, but not before she allegedly tried to pilfer $20,000.
The woman is barred from working in dentistry while the case against her moves forward. She is due back in court May 28.
