Police departments across the Hudson Valley are warning parents about a potentially dangerous TikTok trend.
Police say the “Orbeez Challenge” suggests participants shoot at people with Orbeez water gel pellets using an airsoft-style gun.
The Eastchester Police Department is among the departments taking to social media to increase awareness about this risky trend. They say the challenge is not only dangerous to the person being fired upon, but also the individual carrying the gun as it can easily be mistaken for a real firearm.
In a post on their Facebook page, police say “the guns, commonly known as Orbeez are replicas of actual firearms, so much so that several of the models are indistinguishable from the real thing. The toy guns fire a gel/water pellet. The guns have recently been the subject of a ‘TikTok Challenge’ nationwide. The challenge encourages people to do [a] drive-by-style shooting using projectile shooters known as gel blasters or gel ball guns. In some cases, the water-filled gel beads are frozen to intensify their effects. The challenge is not only dangerous to the person being fired upon, but also the individual carrying the gun as it can easily be mistaken for a real firearm.”
Officials are reminding parents to monitor what their children are doing online and on social media. They are asking parents to not purchase the guns or allow their children to possess an Orbeez. They also suggest that parents discuss with their children the dangers of such actions.
