Authorities say another NYPD officer has taken his own life, making him the ninth officer to commit suicide this year.
Police say Robert Echeverria, 56, was off-duty when he shot himself in the head Wednesday at his home in Queens. He was rushed to North Shore University Hospital on Long Island where he was pronounced dead.
Echeverria was a member of the strategic responses unit in Queens and was with the department for more than 25 years.
The NYPD tweeted saying it is saddened by the news, and is reminding officers that help is available if needed.
Earlier in the week, another NYPD officer committed suicide in his Yonkers home.
