Greenburgh police say a suspect wanted for a violent crime shot himself to death Tuesday night.
According to Greenburgh Police Chief John Kapica, the man was a fugitive wanted by Hackensack police in New Jersey for a violent felony. The suspect was tracked by authorities to the LaQuinta Hotel on Saw Mill River Road in Elmsford and police say they staked out his location all day Tuesday. When the man left the building around 7 p.m. and entered a taxi, officers followed him in marked police vehicles.
Police say they pulled over the taxi near the intersection of Saw Mill River Road and Hunter Lane. Moments later, they heard a gunshot and found the man?s body near the car. Police have ruled the man?s death a suicide.
"He decided he wasn't going to go to jail for the crime he committed," Kapica says.
The man is not being identified yet by authorities. Police say he was on the run since February. The Westchester medical examiner will determine the official cause of death through an autopsy.
