Police say a man found dead in the basement of a Newburgh building is the city?s fifth homicide victim this year.
Police say the man, who was in his early 20s, was killed in a building known for drug activity.
Last year, two people were killed in Newburgh, and in 2006 only one.
The rash of homicides this year has some so concerned that they are calling for a mandatory curfew.
?I've been a community activist here in Newburgh for over 30 years and this is the worst I have ever seen it,? says an activist who identified himself as JJ.
People who live on the block said - on condition of anonymity - that the building where the victim was found, 72 Lander St., is a known hot spot for drugs. JJ says the combination of drugs and guns has wreaked havoc in Newburgh.
A meeting on the proposed curfew is scheduled to take place June 30 at 7:00 p.m. at the Heights Community Center on South Lander Street.
