Two men were arrested Wednesday after police say an officer was hurt on the Bronx River Parkway during a routine traffic stop.
Authorities say Officer Brian Carroll pulled a car over on the northbound side of the parkway at about 2:30 a.m. Minutes later, he was rear-ended by a silver Mercedes. Police say two men who were riding in the Mercedes fled on foot while Carroll was trapped in his vehicle.
Cops shut down part of the parkway and called in K-9 units to search for the occupants of the Mercedes. Using thermal heat sensors, police found the two men buried underneath dirt not far from the accident scene at approximately 3:30 a.m.
The two men, both from Westchester, were arrested and the driver has been charged with vehicular assault, driving while intoxicated and fleeing the scene. The passenger was also charged with fleeing the scene.
The injured officer was taken to Westchester Medical Center and is expected to be OK.
