Police say a husband and wife were found dead in an apparent murder-suicide Wednesday morning in a quiet Sloatsburg neighborhood.

Police say they received a call from a concerned friend of William Groesbeck just before 10 a.m. That friend told police that Groesbeck was in distress, and was waiting for officers when they arrived at Groesbeck's home at 3 Adam Court.

Ramapo Police Capt. Thomas Cokeley says the two responding officers heard a gunshot as they pulled up to the home. Inside, the Ramapo emergency team found Groesbeck, 69, and his wife, 64-year-old Patricia Nigro.

An initial investigation showed that Groesbeck shot his wife and then himself, officials say.

News 12 has learned that Groesbeck was a retired police officer from Ramsey, New Jersey.

The investigation into the incident is ongoing.
