Police in Yonkers say the man suspected of robbing a local bank is a Metropolitan Transportation Authority worker who was in need of cash.
Police say 50-year-old David Figueroa, an engineer with the MTA, had financial problems that allegedly drove him to commit the crime. ?But most people who have financial problems don't rob banks,? says Deputy Chief Edward Geiss, of the Yonkers Police Department.
Figueroa, a former Yonkers resident, is accused of robbing the Webster Bank branch where he used to be a customer. Police say he entered the bank after 10 a.m. Wednesday and claimed to have a gun. He then allegedly took a teller to the vault, authorities say, where he was given $43,000 and then escaped.
Police then began a massive manhunt when witnesses said the suspect fled on foot. Cops say Figueroa had escaped to his home in Beacon. Police say that when he arrived home, his girlfriend told him he was being searched for.
Geiss says he went to Beacon in search of Figueroa. ?He admitted that in fact he did rob the bank and showed the detectives where he hid the money,? he says.
Figueroa reportedly told detectives he didn't want people to know where he worked because he was afraid of losing his job. The alleged bank robber faces years in prison if convicted.
