A 6-year-old boy is recovering in the hospital after police say he was shot in the chest in Yonkers Thursday night.
Police say the boy was inside 69 Ash St. around 6 p.m. He was opening the front door to welcome a family member when the incident occurred.
They say two suspects, accompanied by a third, were in front of the house when two of them allegedly displayed handguns and began firing multiple shots in the direction of two intended targets who had just exited a nearby cab. The intended targets were apparently not struck.
Three teenagers, all under 18 years old, scattered after the boy was struck, but police say they were taken into custody within 15 minutes of the shooting.
Police say two illegal handguns were recovered - a .380 caliber Bryco Arms semi-automatic pistol and a 9mm Ruger semi-automatic pistol.
Investigators believe that the motive for the incident is a continuation and escalation of disputes and group violence involving juveniles and young adults.
Firefighters rushed to the area to treat the young boy, a student at the Enrico Fermi School, before he was taken to Jacobi Medical Center in the Bronx in stable condition.
A 17-year-old male and 15-year-old male have been identified as shooters. A 16-year-old male has been identified as an accomplice. All three suspects are from Yonkers.
The 17-year-old and 15-year-old were charged with attempted murder and assault, in addition to other charges. The 16-year-old was charged with hindering prosecution and criminal possession of a firearm.
The three suspects were virtually arraigned in the Youth Part of the Westchester County Superior Court on Friday.
The 17-year-old and 15-year-old defendants were remanded into the custody of a juvenile detention facility. The 16-year-old defendant was released into the custody of his parent/legal guardian.
Yonkers Police Commissioner John Mueller says there's been a spike in gun violence involving young children.
Mayor Mike Spano says law enforcement will increase its presence throughout the city to combat ongoing crime in the area.
